Every city is nestled on top of a watering hole, bursting with truths that have been hidden and controlled. Queen’s City is no different to any other urban bustling spot in so-called Australia. Except in the heart of this city lies All Ways Skate + Sing. It is the only place in town where truth can be rewritten into the past.
Queen’s City is a new theatre work inspired by the missing narratives, rewritten history and the lack of truth in the story of ‘urban’ colonisation, as often depicted in museum collections and archives. Inspired by writer/director Alethea Beetson’s residency at Museum of Brisbane and a need to have fun with her peers to survice working in the settler colonial music industry, the story is set in 1980s at the fictional capital city Queen’s City where a karaoke bar and skating rink (All ways Skate + Sing) is home to the Indigenous people who have – for various reasons pertaining to the colony – found their way to this significant place.
