Walking with Gertrude

Immerse yourself in a time-travelling theatrical walking tour with renowned art critic Dr Gertrude Langer (1908 – 1984), one of Brisbane’s earliest and most passionate critics of modern art. Escaping Hitler’s Europe as the Second World War broke out, Austrian immigrants Dr Gertrude Langer and her architect husband Dr Karl Langer, arrived to make Brisbane their home.

Step back in time to the Brisbane of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s to discover the significant role Gertrude played in educating a local Brisbane audience, who until now had few opportunities to learn first-hand about art developments and movements from an international perspective.

Armed with a PhD in art history, a passion for the modern art movement and a determination to share her knowledge, Gertrude’s efforts left a lasting impact on the Brisbane art scene.

Expanding on the legacies of migration and modernism shared in the Bauhaus Now exhibition, this theatrical walking tour uncovers how Gertrude’s influence changed the face of Brisbane forever.

“Thanks to her efforts, the Brisbane she departed in 1984 was a very different Brisbane to the one she entered in 1939” – Betty Churcher, Brisbane-born former director of the National Gallery of Australia.

Tour begins in King George Square Foyer of Brisbane City Hall.

Duration of tour: 90mins (tours may extend beyond 90mins)
