Artist in Residence Program
Expressions of Interest

Call for Expressions of Interest:

Museum of Brisbane (MoB) invites Expressions of Interest for openings in our 2025/2026 Artist in Residence program. We are looking for applications from artists, creatives and collectives practising across a broad range of art forms and disciplines including, but not limited to, visual art, photography, film, digital media, music, sound, literacy, poetry, performance, dance, architecture and fashion. We encourage applications from people who identify as First Nations, CALD and/or people with disability.

MoB’s Artist in Residence program threads distinct voices and perspectives into our vibrant galleries and inspires creative dialogue and connection with the local community in Brisbane, as well as with national and global audiences. It promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity and conversations about the evolving life of our city from inside the Museum’s historic site, Brisbane City Hall.

Principles of Commitment

We are committed to creating opportunities within our Artist in Residence program that align with our Principles of Commitment:

Champions for Brisbane: We proudly contribute to the profile and prosperity of our city.

First Peoples: We recognise and respect the enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Inclusion: We are enriched by the diverse voices, experiences and communities we collaborate with.

Sustainable: We play an active role in creating positive social, economic and environmental outcomes.

What we are looking for

Throughout 2025 and 2026, we are looking to support residency projects that facilitate community engagement and/or participatory experiences for Museum audiences. Our first opening will take place in mid-2025. EOIs will also be considered for other periods over the two-year timeframe, subject to artist and MoB availability. Residencies will run for a minimum of four weeks.

The purpose of the residency program is to provide time and space for creatives to focus on process: thinking, experimenting, consulting and making. Projects may result in a physical exhibition or presentation outcome in the Museum, such as the Dome Gallery.

We are looking for proposals that facilitate community participation and bring stories from the outside into a museum context. Proposals might evolve from engagement with the Museum and its collection, however, may also develop in response to the local environment and community.

Proposals should:

  • Be participatory and engaging
  • Be place-based, community centred and culturally inclusive
  • Be willing to embrace necessary constraints and work within parameters of the Museum environment
  • Incorporate a high degree of personal and professional maturity

Further details

There is a multi-purpose studio space available if required. Other available spaces and facilities can be negotiated, dependent upon residency needs. The Museum encourages peer to peer connections between participating artists and will facilitate informal opportunities for artists to build relationships with each other and the wider Museum community of stakeholders and supporters.

Artist fees will be negotiated with MoB to suit the scale and breadth of the project. Successful applicants may also choose to apply for additional funding, independent of the Museum, to support additional components of a project.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have permanent work rights to work in Australia, over 18 years of age and reside in Brisbane or have a connection or specific research interest in the city or region.

Assessment Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by Museum of Brisbane, and will be assessed alongside the overall aim and objectives of the residency program, with a focus on the following criteria:

  • How the project facilitates community engagement and/or participatory experiences
  • Deliverability of the project within budget and with available Museum resources
  • Demonstration of artistic merit – quality, integrity and originality
  • Consideration of anticipated benefits to the artist’s professional development
  • Contribution to Museum culture and broader community, as outlined in our values and principles of commitment
